Empathy vs. Sympathy What Is the Difference

Is that â€Å"empathy† or â€Å"sympathy† youre showing? While the two words are often incorrectly used interchangeably, the difference in their emotional impact is important. Empathy, as the ability to actually feel what another person is feeling — literally â€Å"walk a mile in their shoes† — goes beyond sympathy, a simple expression of concern for another person’s misfortune. Taken to extremes, deep or extended feelings of empathy can actually be harmful to one’s emotional health. Sympathy Sympathy is a feeling and expression of concern for someone, often accompanied by a wish for them to be happier or better off. â€Å"Oh dear, I hope the chemo helps.† In general, sympathy implies a deeper, more personal, level of concern than pity, a simple expression of sorrow.   However, unlike empathy, sympathy does not imply that one’s feelings for another are based on shared experiences or emotions. Empathy As a translation into English of the German word Einfà ¼hlung — â€Å"feeling into† — made by psychologist Edward Titchener in 1909, â€Å"empathy† is the ability to recognize and share another person’s emotions. Empathy requires the ability to recognize the suffering of another person from their point of view and to openly share their emotions, including painful distress. Empathy is often confused with sympathy, pity and compassion, which are merely recognition of another person’s distress. Pity typically implies that the suffering person does not â€Å"deserve† what has happened to him or her and is powerless to do anything about it. Pity shows a lower degree of understanding and engagement with the suffering person’s situation than empathy, sympathy, or compassion. Compassion is a deeper level of empathy, demonstrating an actual desire to help the suffering person. Since it requires shared experiences, people can generally feel empathy only for other people, not for animals. While people may be able to sympathize with a horse, for example, they cannot truly empathize with it. The Three Types of Empathy According to psychologist and pioneer in the field of emotions, Paul Ekman, Ph.D., three distinct types of empathy have been identified: Cognitive Empathy: Also called â€Å"perspective taking,† cognitive empathy is the ability to understand and predict the feelings and thoughts of other by imagining one’s self in their situation.Emotional Empathy: Closely related to cognitive empathy, emotional empathy is the ability to actually feel what another person feels or at least feel emotions similar to theirs. In emotional empathy, there is always some level of shared feelings. Emotional empathy can be a trait among persons diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.Compassionate Empathy: Driven by their deep understanding of the other person’s feelings based on shared experiences, compassionately empathic people make actual efforts to help. While it can give meaning to our lives, Dr. Ekman warns that empathy can also go terribly wrong. The Dangers of Empathy Empathy can give purpose to our lives and truly comfort people in distress, but it can also do great harm. While showing an empathetic response to the tragedy and trauma of others can be helpful, it can also, if misdirected, turn us into what Professor James Dawes has called â€Å"emotional parasites.† Empathy Can Lead to Misplaced Anger Empathy can make people angry — perhaps dangerously so — if they mistakenly perceive that another person is threatening a person they care for. For example, while at a public gathering, you notice a heavyset, casually dressed man who you think is â€Å"staring† at your pre-teenage daughter. While the man has remained expressionless and has not moved from his spot, your empathetic understanding of what he â€Å"might† be thinking of doing to your daughter drives you into a state of rage. While there was nothing in the man’s expression or body language that should have lead you to believe he intended to harm your daughter, your empathetic understanding what was probably â€Å"going on inside his head† took you there. Danish family therapist Jesper Juul has referred to empathy and aggression as â€Å"existential twins.† Empathy Can Drain Your Wallet For years, psychologists have reported cases of overly empathetic patients endangering the well-being of themselves and their families by giving away their life savings to random needy individuals. Such overly empathetic people who feel they are somehow responsible for the distress of others have developed an empathy-based guilt. The better-known condition of â€Å"survivor guilt† is a form of empathy-based guilt in which an empathic person incorrectly feels that his or her own happiness has come at the cost or may have even caused another person’s misery. According to psychologist Lynn O’Connor, persons who regularly act out of empathy-based guilt, or â€Å"pathological altruism,† tend to develop mild depression in later-life. Empathy Can Harm Relationships Psychologists warn that empathy should never be confused with love. While love can make any relationship — good or bad — better, empathy cannot and can even hasten the end of a strained relationship. Essentially, love can cure, empathy cannot. As an example of how even well-intentioned empathy can damage a relationship, consider this scene from the animated comedy television series The Simpsons: Bart, bemoaning the failing grades on his report card, says, â€Å"This is the worst semester of my life.† His dad, Homer, based on his own school experience, tries to comfort his son by telling him, â€Å"Your worst semester so far.† Empathy Can Lead to Fatigue Rehabilitation and trauma counselor Mark Stebnicki coined the term â€Å"empathy fatigue† to refer to a state of physical exhaustion resulting from repeated or prolonged personal involvement in the chronic illness, disability, trauma, grief, and loss of others. Pre Natal Women are restricted from how much exercise they can do and what type of exercise they can do. Many women may already go to the gym before they are pregnant so they will wish to continue their exercise and will want to look for classes that can suit their needs and not put them in any danger of damaging and injuring themselves whilst pregnant.. However other pre natal women may not have been to the gym before however they may want to start going to the gym while they are pregnant to keep them fit rather than Just sat down doing no exercise. It will be better for the baby which may attract them to use the gym and find out what classes there are at the gym. I am going to look at a variety of gyms from different sectors to find out what they can offer. All gyms have different aims and objectives and I will try to find out if any of the gyms have any aims to achieve through working with pre natal women. The benefits mean pre natal women will want to get into exercise and want to know what is available for them. DEW Sports Gym is a Private provision gym and is not involved or funded by any government. This gym doesn’t advertise any specific exercise groups however they offer a wide range of group exercises. Not all classes would be available for pre natal women however there is some they will be able to take part in due to their condition. The exercises they can take part in are Palates and Aqua sessions. The majority of the sessions are in the 10:00 – 17:00 time slot which could be a problem as they may work through until the late stages of their pregnancy and the gym sessions are inside mainstream working hours. As these classes are not for specific groups the price of the class is included in your gym membership at the gym which is priced at EYE. O for a full membership including peak and off peak hour’s access. Whereas Bloodworm gyms time slots for exercises classes that can involve pre natal women are in the evening making it easier for pre natal women to attend in case they have mainstream working ours. Here is a part of their timetable which shows both the Palates and Yoga classes that are available: no gym included and they usually only deliver one specific class. A popular example of this is Samba classes as they are often ran outside of gyms in leisure centers or village halls. For pre natal women I have found one class in the local area called ‘Fit Bumps Fit Mums’ they deliver pre natal yoga classes and Palate’s classes. This class is designed specifically for pre natal women. In my opinion this is the best option for pre natal women in the local area as it is specific to them. They have evening sessions at SST Thomas church hall, they also have a session at west Knots collage. The sessions have to be paid for 6 weeks in advance and the cost is EYE. O this means it is roughly E each session which could be seen as more expensive however if you pay for a gym membership and use it once a week then you pay around EYE for 6 weeks’ worth of membership. So it is near enough Just as much as gym session however it is much more specific exercise group with other people in the same situation, this gives pre natal women a chance to mix with each other and meet and socialist with new friends. All participants will be at the same level as well. Whereas at a gym there will be normal fit people taking part sop you may struggle to keep up with them. Post Natal Women will be going through a stage trying to get rid of their baby fat. Women on average should usually wait 6 Weeks before getting back into regular exercise, this will differ depending on how much exercise you took part in before child birth. For the women who attended the gym during pregnancy then they will wish to carry on specific classes as they will still be restricted certain types and mounts of exercise. For the women who didn’t already attend the gym before or during pregnancy then they will defiantly not want to free train they will want a class specific to them so they can get their fitness back and continue with their normal lifestyle. I will research what each gym from different sectors has to offer and compare what gym would be the most suitable for post natal women. This will be the gym with the best classes for these specific groups with targets to improve that specific area and also if there is a choice we will look at what gyms have better more accessible facilities and which gym that you get best value of money from. For Post natal women the voluntary sector again offers good classes, the same voluntary provision ‘Fit Bumps Fit Mums’ which continue on after the pregnancy they do a ’21 day plan’ ran through an online programmer accessible by their private Backbone group. The programmer includes 21 days’ worth of workouts that can be done at home. I believe this is a good idea as it means they don’t have to go straight back to exercise in a gym where they may feel like they are behind which will be depressing for them. The search to discover who we are is one of life’s greatest challenges. William James has stated, there are three types of selves exist in order to form one’s identity. The material self, which is simply the physical appearance of that person. The social self, how the person looks like in other’s view. The spiritual self, which only the person himself can know. These variety parts of our identities, some we know well, others we’re yet to uncover. Therefore people begin searching. Here come the challenges that we must undertake in order to gain a sense of self. The sacrifices of identity in order to join into a group, disappointment to other’s misunderstand and loneliness. Stories from Alice Pung’s ‘Growing Up Asian in Australia’ and poems by Bruce Dawe have introduced the anecdotes of many people’s lives experiences to prove that how the journey of finding identity is tough. Blend into a group to find out who we are is a challenge for some people if they are carrying too different identities from others. Through the process of belonging, it is not only the way people seek for love but also a way people find out the more hidden part in their identities. When we fit in, we see ourselves reflected in others. The way we cost of fit in will be huge if two’s identities are not in common. A migrant and an Australia born Vietnamese. Theses two women who carry the most different identities live together as a family. Diana, the protagonist from the story ‘Five ways to disappoint your Vietnamese mother’ who identify herself with the environment of Australia. Her payment for fit in the environment that she feels belong is to sacrifice her family with different ways to disappoint her mother’s wills, who is the only family member Diana left in this world. The same payment reveals in Snake’s decision to give up his sister and father’s lives to belong to the gang. His extremely different identity to the gang is been discovered by King ‘The others will tell you you’re in the gang but you and I know different. ’ Snake eventually fits in the group that he wishes to find out his identity from indeed, with the price of his family’s life. As our international students, by sacrificing the sweet and warmful home, we come Australia alone to search a deeper sense of self in our identities. It is a challenge, since our different values and identities from others who live here, occurs us hard to blend in and find out ourselves. There are many challenges in life such as the loneliness and oppression which we need to undertake in order to discover the identity of ourselves. The protagonist in the poem ‘The Family Man’ by Bruce Dawe. The family man seems like a person surrounds by happiness, but the real spirit inside his heart is full of loneliness. He ‘kept his own counsel’ by not sharing with anyone, and locked himself with loneliness and depression. The overdose of isolation lastly becomes the greatest challenge in his life, ends with a lonely way ‘lay dead in his own wood-shed’. Ironically he finds out his identity through the death which is a ‘proper end’ for him, a lonely man. The oppression of a person’s life becomes the activator of a person’s journey to find out her new self. Aditi, the main character of the story ‘Wei-Li and Me’. From the start of oppressing the anger till eventually the explored of her irritation, Aditi faces this transformation by herself and overcomes the challenge of bullying from her classmate Barry. By undertaken these challenges Aditi successfully develops herself with a brave part in her identity. The difficulties in our lives are many, by overcomes them we are able to find out our new perspective of selves. Sometimes one can not fully understand one another. There are many targets we set in our lives. By going through many different processes and overcomes many difficulties, people are able to win their own achievements. When people success, the satisfaction will cover the rest of the four needs in a person’s life as Maslow’s hierarchy has mentioned. One of the targets in our lives is to find out who we really are. To belong, people are willing to discover their identities through the common with others in the group. But more often, it is impossible to know another completely. In the story ‘Homo Suburbiens’ the man seems lonely by standing in his back garden alone. In fact, he is surrounding by peace, enjoying and belonged in his backyard. He is not lonely although he is alone. The misunderstanding of a person exists because we always judge people by how we think in our views. Sometime we are blind to see the truth. In the story ‘Up the wall ’ and ‘The family man’, both of the characters are surrounding by their children, they supposed to be happy as ‘kids make a home’. Paradoxically, kids do not. The housewife is not satisfy by her children, she supposed to be belonged, but the identity she carries and where she belongs doesn’t match, the frustration occurred. The housewife explores her isolation to her husband who should be the one understand her. But by showing his none-sympathetic behaviour, it proves that people are blind to see the authentic feeling of another’s. A person’s real self will never be understand by others no matter how close they are, although they are in the same family. The family man’s family are surprised by the death of his since they thought he would be happy about his life. It is impossible for a person to totally understand another. The difficulties in one’s life are many. The loneliness, oppression and sacrifice of selves. These challenges are revealed especially in one’s journey to discover his identity. Through the process of belonged, a person is able to find out who he really is, but it can be tough is one’s identity is totally different from others in the group. The failure of understanding others are also exists. All these experiences are covered in the stories by Alice Pung’s ‘Growing up Asian in Australia’ and Bruce Dawe’s poems, and they successfully prove that a person’s journey of discovering his identity has to undergo with many challenges which could be the greatest in his life.

Ad: In formal writing, the full form, advertisement, is usually employed. 2. But with the right plans, you can have a great time with kids during holidays. Here is a 5-step plan on how to survive the holidays with kids: 1. Prepare a list of activities that will be a hit with the kids and keep them off your hair. It could be soccer class, swimming class, camps, or craft classes. Kids love to try out new stuff. Find out what activities are available in your neighborhood. If your kids friends have signed up for some special courses, you may want to team up with them. This way you can work a carpool schedule too. 2. Organize play dates, slumber parties and picnic with friends. The downside is that you will have to look after more than one child. However, the upside is that kids are usually less clingy when their friends are around. Also, you can squeeze in a bit of me time, when the kids are busy with each other. Besides, whoever said that you cannot rotate the activities in each participating parents house? Today, it is your turn. There will be a golden tomorrow when it is someone elses turn. 3. Stock up on supplies. Kids at home mean more food, more mess, and more activities. Keep your ammunition ready. Wipes. Sanitizers. Raincoat. Snacks. First Aid Kits. Crayons. DIY project kits. Even if you think that you may not need them all, there is no harm in stocking up. You never know when you will need these. 4. Set some ground rules from Day 1 and be firm. Ground Rule No.1 is no TV before dinner and bedtime brushing of teeth. That way, you ensure that when the kids fall asleep on the couch, it is easy to carry them off to their beds. 5. If you are traveling out with kids, including an adventure in the itinerary. Typically, beach locations, wild-life sanctuaries, and camps are fun for kids. You cant expect your 3-year-old to behave in a mall, which is overflowing with goodies and toys on Christmas Eve. Likewise, you cannot expect him to trudge up a hill, just because you love trekking. Make realistic plans, if you want to save your sanity.
